“Thus says the LORD, ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die; you shall not recover." - 2 Kings 20:1 (ESV)
Hezekiah the King of Judah was ill and Isaiah the prophet shared the above word of God with him, which would be a shocker to hear. Spoiler Alert: God granted Hezekiah 15 more years to live. (Verse 4-6)
This year I hired an attorney to go over estate planning, for myself and other family members. We had to plan who would oversee our financial and medical decisions if we were unable to and who would benefit from our death and so on. I figured it must be important to God if He warned Hezekiah to do so. After getting the legalities settled, the Lord brought up His word to me which asks, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” - Mark 8:36-37 (KJV)
We may have worked most of our lives and accumulated wealth according to the world's standards but when God confronts the condition of one’s soul, no matter our status or our possessions in this life, there is one who oversees what we take with us when we die. His name is Jesus and He shares His word with us in the following scriptures:
“Truly, truly I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgement, but has passed out of death into life.” - John 5:24 (NASB)
“I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” – John 10:9 (NASB)
“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the One and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” - John 6:40 (NASB)
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love and Your word. Thank You for helping us put in perspective the value of our soul and that our best investment and planning our future is our belief in Jesus, our Savior, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. - John 14:6
