“And Moses built an alter and named it ‘The LORD is my Banner.” - Exodus 17:15 (NASB)
When I think of a banner, my first thought pictures a parade with a marching band, and as the band can be heard from a distance, the first site one sees are two members of the band carrying a banner with a person on each end, marching at the forefront, so onlookers can identify the school they represent. I also think of a flag placed at homes which represent something important to them, whether it is patriotic or a football team and so on.
When the children of Israel were freed from the Egyptians, Moses was charged with leading them into the Promise Land. They faced many hardships while wandering in the wilderness, even though the land was promised, the journey through dangerous territory was led by God via a pillar of fire and a cloud of smoke. He was before them, Jehovah Nissi – “the Lord is my banner.” Moses knew God was Jehovah Nissi.
I can’t imagine what it must have been like to walk with a visible pillar of fire and a cloud of smoke leading the way, knowing God was before me. I don’t have a pillar of fire in front of me, but I do have the word of God that I can walk in, “We will sing for joy over your victory, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners. May the LORD fulfill all your petitions.” - Psalm 20: 5 (NASB)
What is the banner you are holding?
Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us that You are Jehovah Nissi, may we walk courageously in Your name as You go before us and lead us into each day according to Your will. May we lift Your name up as our Banner.
