The Way of Christ

In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. - Matthew 7:12 (NASB)

Most have probably heard this scripture quoted as “The Golden Rule” maybe from teachers, parents or someone correcting our behavior. You may have even heard others talk about being harder on themselves than they are with others or saying they are their own worst critic, or they have so much guilt or unforgiveness toward themselves but forgive others.

I can relate to being hard on myself or being critical of myself, thankfully; I am getting better at following the advice of someone who once asked if I ever thought about showing myself some grace? It was like a light went off inside me after that question. I had never thought of that before.

I think in order to be free in our souls from the habit of treating ourselves harshly, we must understand what we are saying to ourselves that is contrary to what God has offered us, such as mercy, forgiveness, patience, love, kindness, and once we receive this from Him, we can share what we have received with others.

The more I learn about the character of Jesus and receive for myself His truth, the easier it becomes to treat others the way He treats me.

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are who we learn from, that You are gentle and humble in heart and offer us rest for our souls. May we walk in Your love and treat one another, including ourselves, by way of Your example. (Matthew 11:29)
