Blessed is the Nation

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance. - Psalm 33:12 (NASB)

I recall having discussions with others about the enslaved Israelites who were freed by God from the grip of Pharoah and how they witnessed signs and wonders, were given riches of Egypt, manna from Heaven, and regressed to complaining, distrust, then, to make matters worse, built an idol while Moses was away with the Lord as the Ten Commandments were being etched in stone. After all of God’s miracles, His chosen still struggled to be devoted to Him. In conclusion to our discussion, folks asked, “What is wrong with those people?”

God had a plan and was using Moses to speak on His behalf to a Pharoah who would increase the hardship of the slaves in spite of warnings. God knew the outcome for those He was freeing and those whom He was judging. His chosen didn’t seem to understand there was a plan. A nation was being delivered from slavery and God was being glorified.

How have we been like the Israelites, as a nation, as a people? Maybe we turn away from God for one reason or another instead of fixing our eyes on Him, trusting Him, or maybe we don’t see what God is doing in us and our world. He is not absent. He is working behind the scenes and is using those who will obey Him to accomplish His purpose as He makes known that nothing is impossible with Him. (Mark 10:27) (Relevant reading: Exodus)

Heavenly Father, let us not be ones who believe in You one minute, and don’t the next and decide to worship an idol that can’t save us. Guide us to be the nation whose God is the Lord. Let it start with one heart at a time, our home, our community, our nation who believes and trusts that You have chosen each of us and we are Your inheritance.
