The Lord is My Companion

God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her when the morning dawns. – Psalm 46:5 (NASB)

I have been interested in the names of God to better understand His nature; the essence of what He reveals about Himself within each name. His name Jehovah-Shammah means the Lord is There, The Lord My Companion.

Something happened in my heart when I read “The Lord My Companion”, it made so much sense to me because I love to spend time with Him. I wake up and He is who I feel in my heart, and throughout the day, and when I go to bed at night. I love the comfort I feel in my soul knowing He is with me as I say goodnight to the day.

He promises His people that He is with us always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). I need to keep this promise in mind as I take on the tasks of life, that can cause me to feel as if I am suffocating. I need to simmer down and call upon His name Jehovah-Shammah and ask Him to hold onto me as I need a listening ear, understanding, grace, mercy, strength and the list goes on….

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our companion, thank You that You love to be near Your people. Forgive me that I forget how close You are when I am overwhelmed and refuse Your guidance and choose to handle things on my own. May You be glorified as we Your people recognize You in the nearness of our heart.
