We Will Get to the Other Side

On that day when evening came, He said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side.” - Mark 4:35 (NASB)

Jesus, with His disciples; and other boaters, were crossing the Sea of Galilee when a fierce gale wind developed, waves were breaking over the boat and the boat was filling with water. Jesus was asleep when the disciples woke Him letting Him know they were perishing. Jesus asked, “Why are you afraid. You men of little faith?” (Verse 38)

Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and waves and said to the sea, “Hush, be still” and then all was calm. The disciples then questioned, after their amazement, “Who is this that even the wind and sea obey Him?” (Verses 39-41)

I must admit, after reading Jesus’ initial response and picturing what the disciples and the other boaters must have been thinking while drenched in sea water, and possibly hurling with sea sickness, I would have had an answer to why I was afraid.

After having many tests of my faith, I see how faith is brought to a place of pure trust, when Jesus told the disciples “Let’s go over to the other side” He didn’t promise a smooth ride, but He was with them, He was approachable in their fear, He showed them who He is, in the storm. If Jesus says, “Let’s go…,” that means we are going to make it to the other side.

Relevant reading: Mark 4; Matthew 8:24

What in your life resembles a storm that may be stretching your faith?
